It stops your muscles and joints working together smoothly, weakens your immune system, interferes with digestion, affects your sleep and stops your body from going into 'repair mode'. But more than this, stress and tension in the body directly controls our ability to feel happy and enjoy life. Whether the stress originates in your mind (busy life, worries, negative thoughts etc.) or from your body (exercising, lifting, working at a desk etc.) the result is always a physical one; tension in the body.
If we could just stop everything and put our lives on hold then our body would be able to deal with this build-up by itself, however, for most of us this simply isn't an option. It can help to think of our bodies as factories that take raw materials (food, sleep etc.) and turns them into things like energy and happiness. In reality these are the chemicals that make life worth living; Serotonin, Endorphins, Oxytocin and Dopamine.
When the machine inside the factory is not working properly it doesn’t matter how good the raw materials are (food, sleep etc.), it simply can't make enough of the good stuff. We might experience this lack of chemicals as feelings of pain, fatigue, negative thoughts or anxiety but really these are just symptoms of physical problems inside the body. The way we feel is affected by much more than what happens in our lives or what we put on our plates. There is a physical build up taking place inside all of our bodies every day which if left unaddressed blocks our natural ability to feel great.
